Traveler's diarrhea is caused by infection with bacteria, viruses or parasites, and may be caused by a multitude of microorganisms, which are probably different from one country to another. Often tends to occur as a result of E. coli, Salmonella or Rotavirus among others.

Most bouts of diarrhea are self-limiting, with recovery within a few days, but in some cases, particularly in certain countries, the issue may be complicated, so it is vitally important (mainly in children), to avoid dehydration . This should increase the intake of fluids, preferably bottled or treated , weak tea or oral rehydration.

To avoid this, one should consume bottled water (even for brushing teeth), making sure it has been opened in our presence, and avoid ice cubes.

It is also important not to eat salads or other raw foods, without ensuring that they have been washed properly, or have been kept without refrigeration for several hours, such as street vendors. Fruits should be washed and peeled by the traveler, and vegetables should be cooked and served hot.

In certain countries where cattle are not plentiful, note that often consume milk is milk powder, and we must ensure that the water has been boiled or sterilized properly.

Another reason of intestinal disturbances in travelers is usually the presence of strong and spicy or unusual spices in our diet, to which our stomach is not used.
